What is Plab 1?
The PLAB 1 (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board Part 1) exam is a crucial step for international medical graduates (IMGs) who wish to practice medicine in the United Kingdom. It assesses their ability to apply knowledge to the care of patients, rather than just how well they can recall and recite facts. Here’s a general overview and format of the PLAB 1 exam.
Overview of PLAB 1
Purpose:
To assess whether an IMG has the necessary skills and knowledge to practice medicine in the UK at the same level as a UK graduate at the end of their second year of Foundation Programme training.
Eligibility:
Generally, you need to have a primary medical qualification recognized by the General Medical Council (GMC). Additionally, you might need to prove your English language proficiency through an IELTS or OET test.
When and Where:
The exam is offered at various times throughout the year in multiple locations worldwide, including the UK.
Format

Number of Questions: 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
Duration: The exam lasts for three hours.
Question Format: The questions are of the single best answer (SBA) type, out of five options
Content Areas: The questions cover common, important or acute conditions (medical and surgical) seen by junior doctors in the UK and include:

  • Diagnosis: including history taking, examination, and investigation
  • Emergency management
  • Initial treatment
  • Understanding and application of ethical and legal issues
  • Practical procedures
  • Prescribing

Scoring and Results

Passing Score: The passing score varies as it is determined by a process called standard setting. Each question’s difficulty is taken into account.
Results: Typically, results are available within four weeks of the exam date.

Preparation Tips

Study Resources: Use the GMC’s “Good Medical Practice” and the PLAB blueprint as guides. The blueprint outlines what the exam covers and is essential for understanding the scope of the exam.
Practice Questions: Engage with practice questions to familiarize yourself with the exam format and types of questions asked.
Courses and Books: Consider enrolling in a PLAB preparation course and consulting widely recommended PLAB preparation books.

After Passing PLAB 1
After successfully passing PLAB 1, you’ll need to pass PLAB 2, which is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). It tests your clinical skills in a range of settings. Additionally, you must fulfill other GMC registration requirements, including demonstrating the necessary medical knowledge and competence, as well as meeting health and character standards. The PLAB 1 exam is a significant but manageable hurdle on the path to practicing medicine in the UK. Preparation is key, so take advantage of all available resources and give yourself ample time to study.
