What is Plab 2?
The PLAB 2 exam is the second part of the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test that international medical graduates (IMGs) must pass to practice medicine in the United Kingdom. Following successful completion of PLAB 1, PLAB 2 assesses your clinical skills in a more practical, hands-on manner. Here’s an overview and format of the PLAB 2 exam
Overview of PLAB 2
Purpose:
To assess your ability to work safely as a senior house officer (SHO) in a UK NHS hospital. It focuses on common, important, and acute conditions, as well as testing your practical skills and communication abilities.
Eligibility: To sit for the PLAB 2 exam, you must have passed the PLAB 1 exam within the last two years.
When and Where: The exam is held at the General Medical Council’s clinical assessment center in Manchester, UK. It’s offered at various times throughout the year.
Format

Type of Exam: An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
Number of Stations: The exam consists of 18 stations, with two rest stations, making a total of 20 stations.
Duration: Each station lasts for eight minutes, with an additional two minutes of reading time before each station. The total duration of the exam is approximately 3 hours.
Content Areas: The stations cover a variety of areas, including:

  • History taking
  • Clinical examination
  • Practical skills
  • Communication skills
  • Emergency management

You will be assessed on your ability to apply clinical knowledge in practical scenarios, communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, and demonstrate your practical abilities in safe and effective patient care.

Scoring and Results

Scoring: Each station is scored independently candidates must meet the total score and pass minimum of 10 stations to achieve overall pass.. You must show competence in a range of skills and knowledge across the stations to pass.
Results: Results are usually available within six weeks of taking the exam. Passing PLAB 2 demonstrates that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to practice medicine at the level of a UK-trained doctor starting their second year of Foundation Programme training.

Preparation Tips

Clinical Experience: It’s beneficial to have some clinical experience, particularly in a setting similar to the UK NHS, to understand the context of patient care.
Study Resources: Review clinical guidelines and protocols used in the UK NHS. The GMC provides a test blueprint that outlines the scope of the exam.
Communication Skills: Practice your communication skills, including how to break bad news, explain treatments, and understand patient concerns within a multicultural context.
Mock Exams: Participating in mock OSCEs can be incredibly helpful for familiarizing yourself with the format and time constraints of the exam.

After Passing PLAB 2
Upon passing PLAB 2, you will need to meet other GMC registration requirements to practice medicine in the UK, including demonstrating your knowledge and competence, as well as meeting health, character, and English language proficiency standards
